Suspected ineligible Colo. voters to learn status

DENVER (AP) ? People who received letters questioning their citizenship and right to vote will learn Wednesday what steps Colorado election officials plan next in the battleground state where every vote can be critical in close races.

Some of the nearly 4,000 letters sent by Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler actually went to U.S. citizens, although it's unknown how many. And more than three-quarters went to Democrats and independent voters.

Democrats have criticized the effort and said it can disenfranchise legal voters or make it difficult to exercise their right to vote. Critics also questioned Gessler's political motivations in a year where both major parties see Colorado as key to winning the presidential election. Control of the state Legislature and competitive congressional races are also at stake.

President Barack Obama won Colorado in 2008 by nearly 9 percentage points, the first time a Democrat won the state since Bill Clinton in 1992.

Charmaine Rose, 36, a Canadian immigrant from Toronto who became naturalized in March, is among those who received a letter.

"Well, I was shocked and angry and worried I guess that the first time I get to vote wouldn't happen. I was worried that my vote wouldn't count," she said.

Rose has responded to the letter by sending her naturalization number, but she said she worries her status will continue to be questioned.

"People born here don't have to go through this. I don't think that I should either. I am a U.S. citizen," she said.

A total of 1,566 letters went to Democrats and 1,794 went to unaffiliated voters. Another 486 letters were sent to Republicans.

The American Civil Liberties Union in Colorado said at least 25 eligible voters who got the letters have contacted the organization and the number is growing. The letters ask voters to voluntarily withdraw their registration or affirm they're eligible voters.

"Really, his letter in my mind, is intimidating," said Denise Maes, ACLU public policy director. She said registered voters who received it are "worried that they did something wrong and that their paperwork is not in order."

A public meeting was planned Wednesday on questions surrounding Gessler's plan and how the state should proceed with those who have not responded.

Republican have aggressively pursued initiatives to verify voters' citizenship, particularly in swing states, much to the ire of Democrats who worry that key parts of their base ? Latinos and seniors ? are likely to be disenfranchised.

Election chiefs in Iowa, Michigan, New Mexico and Ohio ? all expected to be competitive in November ? joined Colorado and other states asking the federal government for access to a database to verify citizenship. Colorado got access to the database last week.

Gessler sent letters to people he suspects are non-citizens but appear on voter rolls. Using information from the department of motor vehicles, Gessler identified people who once presented documents showing they were not citizens, such as a green card, when applying for a driver's license. It's unclear whether those people registered to vote by accident while getting a driver's license or when approached by someone as part of registration drive.

Rich Coolidge, a Gessler spokesman, said immigrants sometimes are unaware that they're breaking the law.

"They could've been grocery shopping and somebody said, 'Hey you got a driver's license? Yeah, I got a driver's license. Great, come here and fill this out,'" he said.

Gessler said some people have responded to affirm their citizenship or to withdraw their status. His office plans to release those figures Thursday.

Gessler denies any political motivation and insists his goal is to maintain accurate voter rolls. His office said it did not look at party registration when sending the letters.

"As the state's chief election official, he is obligated to make sure that only eligible voters are casting ballots," Coolidge said. "We identified a vulnerability in the system, we identified people who exploited, or accidentally exploited that vulnerability, and we're going to shut down that loophole."

Gessler's office provided The Associated Press with the party affiliation of people who received the letters but denied a request to see their names, citing an ongoing investigation. Some county clerks have said they don't want to have a list of suspected ineligible voters because they fear those people would be harassed if the names become public.

Coolidge said 1,500 of the people who got letters have previously voted. But election officials have been unable to determine whether they registered and voted after becoming citizens. Gessler said the federal database ? known as the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements ? will allow his office to verify which registered voters are now U.S. citizens.

Democrats and voting advocacy groups have dismissed Gessler's assertion that ineligible voters have cast ballots and insist he has shown no proof of widespread fraud.

U.S. oil industry waits out Isaac, no damage reported

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Isaac was downgraded to a tropical storm on Wednesday as it continued to batter the U.S. Gulf Coast, causing flooding and power outages but so far no discernible damage to refineries or offshore oil and gas platforms.

The National Hurricane Center downgraded Isaac from a hurricane to a tropical storm as of 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT). The storm center was 50 miles to the southwest of New Orleans and maintained wind speeds as high as 70 miles per hour.

U.S. crude oil futures dropped 84 cents to settle at $95.49 a barrel, and gasoline futures fell by around 0.7 percent on Wednesday, a sign that energy traders did not expect the region's oil and gas infrastructure to suffer major damages. Natural gas futures rose by less than 1 percent.

"The rigs offshore should be up in about a week," said Kenneth Medlock, an energy expert at Rice University's Baker Institute in Houston.

"The offshore facilities should be OK with regard to major damage ... I would not expect a prolonged production outage."

Shell plans to begin flyover inspections of its platforms in the central Gulf of Mexico on Thursday and could begin restarting them on Friday.

BP Plc and Chevron Corp said they were waiting for weather to improve before sending crews to inspect platforms and potentially restart them.

In Louisiana's southernmost parish, Plaquemines, waters flowed over a levee and prompted flooding. The area around the 247,000 barrel per day (bpd) Alliance, Louisiana plant owned by Phillips 66 was evacuated.

Phillips was unable to confirm whether the plant itself was flooded.

As of early Wednesday, U.S. government figures showed 95 percent of oil and 72 percent of natural gas production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico remained shut in. Platforms have been shutting down since last week as a precautionary measure.

Some 936,500 barrels per day of refining capacity, or 5.5 percent of the U.S. total, remained offline due to Isaac.

The U.S. Gulf typically accounts for 23 percent of domestic oil and 7 percent of natural gas production. The coastal region's refineries account for 45 percent of U.S. crude processing capacity.

LOOP OUTAGE

Isaac continued to cause dangerous storm surges and flooding as it pelted coastal Louisiana with rain. More than 650,000 homes and businesses in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama had power outages.

The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP) suffered a power outage due to a damaged transmission line. The line serving LOOP's facilities is located in a marsh, which could make its repair more difficult, utility Entergy said.

LOOP's offshore terminal normally receives crude imports but has been shut down during Isaac. It will again take cargoes once it reopens since it relies on diesel generators.

The power outage may affect LOOP's onshore terminal operations, including a storage facility, and curtail some crude shipments on pipelines, LOOP spokeswoman Barb Hestermann said, without offering further details.

LOOP's pipelines connect to refineries that account for around half of U.S. refining capacity.

Emergency management officials in Garyville, Louisiana, said there were no reports of flooding or damage at Marathon Petroleum Corp's 490,000 bpd refinery.

Independent refiner Valero Energy said crews were riding out the storm inside two of its shuttered Louisiana plants -- located in Meraux and Norco -- and would assess for any damages once Isaac had passed.

Louisiana typically processes around 3 million bpd in its plants, many of which are located in low-lying areas near the coast.

5 Benefits of a C Corporation | The Business Finance Store

Is it time to take your business to the next level? Once you have a few employees and profits are picking up it may be time to evaluate how your growing business is affecting your personal assets. ?Incorporating can protect you against legal actions, business debts, and taxes that erode your income.

According to Entrepreneur Magazine, if you are a small business owner wondering how to incorporate your business? the C corporation may seem like the wallflower of American corporation options. Often thought of as the choice of big business, a C corporation offers several advantages to smaller businesses that may make it a more attractive option than a Limited Liability Corporation or S Corporation. ?The name ?C Corporation? is derived from the fact that Subchapter C of the Internal Revenue Code governs the federal taxation of basic corporations in the United States, and it is important to understand the benefits of this business structure prior to moving forward with incorporating.

  1. Limited personal liability from lawsuits and creditors. An important advantage of a C Corporation is that it exists as an entity separate from its director, shareholders, officers and employees.? The personal assets of individuals are protected, as legal action and judgements brought against the corporation are payable by the corporation, limiting the personal liability of the individuals involved.
  2. Lower taxes. ?Even though the taxes on C corporations are treated differently from other business entities in that they do not enjoy pass-through tax features, smaller businesses may benefit from income tax savings. While the first $50,000 of annual personal income is taxed at a rate of 28%, as a C Corporation the income tax rate on the same amount is only 15%. This is significantly lower than income taxed through an LLC, an S corporation or sole proprietorship. ?As salaries, rents, depreciation, donations, repairs, maintenance and benefits are tax-deductible for C corporations, it may be possible to reduce your business income to under $50,000, making this an attractive alternative to the other options.
  3. Tax deductions for health insurance premiums and medical reimbursement plan. Businesses set up as a C Corporation enjoy a tax deduction of 100% of health insurance premiums paid for all employees. Additionally, corporations that choose to initiate a medical reimbursement plan for medical expenses not covered by health insurance can deduct the full amount of these expenses. Great for the employees and the employer.
  4. Easier to get venture capital and outside investors. ?If your business is looking for $5 million or more in funding, give a C corporation another look. The flexible owner options make C Corporations attractive to venture capitalists and other outside equity funding sources. It also makes it easier to take a business public.
  5. Deduct fringe benefits. If your business provides education, public transportation monthly passes, vehicles for employees, and life insurance on employees (up to $50,000 each) becoming a C corporation allows you to deduct these fringe benefits.

The Business Magazine Inc. reports there are pros and cons to each of the incorporation options available to small business owners in the United States.? Research each option carefully to find the one best suited for your business goals. ?Though most entrepreneurs think of it as a choice for a business with at least 100 employees, or one that is poised to go public, a C corporation has some features that make it worth a second look for? smaller small businesses too!

Nike says it stands by Lance Armstrong

By NBCNews.com staff

Jamie Squire / Getty Images

Since 2004, Nike has helped Lance Armstong's Livestrong foundation raise over $100 million.

Nike Inc plans to continue to support Lance Armstrong even after the seven-time Tour de France cycling champion is stripped of his titles for deciding to no longer fight charges of doping, while bicycle maker Trek is analyzing the situation.

"Lance has stated his innocence and has been unwavering on this position. Nike plans to continue to support Lance and the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a foundation that Lance created to serve cancer survivors," Nike said in a prepared statement Friday.

Late on Thursday, Armstrong said he would no longer fight allegations from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that he cheated throughout his career by using performance enhancing drugs.

"Enough is enough," said Armstrong, a cancer survivor considered one of the all-time greats in his sport, in a statement.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency announced it would strip Armstrong of his titles and ban him from competitive cycling.

Nike, the world's biggest sportswear maker, is a longtime supporter of Armstrong and Livestrong, his organization to help cancer survivors and raise money for cancer research.

Since 2004, Nike has helped Livestrong raise over $100 million and created the Livestrong yellow wristbands that became a global phenomenon with over 84 million bands distributed.

Trek Bicycle Corp has sponsored Armstrong since 1999 and sponsors the Radio Shack Nissan Trek team at the Tour de France.

The Wisconsin-based bike company said it is monitoring developments. It has not pulled its sponsorship of Armstrong in the triathlons he has done or other bike rides.

Trek also sells Livestrong branded bikes.

Watch DARPA?s latest military robot flex its inflatable arm

When you think of robots, one quality that immediately springs to mind is superhuman strength, and that's something this new bot from iRobot definitely embodies. Developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Advanced Inflatable Robot (AIR) has a blow-up arm that weighs only half a pound yet can lift and pull up to three.

The AIR uses tank-style treads to get around. When it finds something it needs to interact with, a hatch on its top opens and the robotic arm inside of it inflates. Then, when it's finished, the arm deflates and is safely stowed back inside.

While it can only lift a couple of pounds at present, iRobot believes it's possible to increase its strength by using more air pressure. The limb is actually designed to have some give; in the event the robot runs into objects and people, it can quickly release pressure so as not to cause damage.

We've seen air used in another DARPA robot prototype recently. In that case, it's pumped in and out of a soft-bodied, crawling bot that's able to change its color to camouflage itself and avoid detection when infiltrating enemy lines.

Martian Curiosity: How Do You Drive a $2.5 Billion Mars Rover?

Taking a 1-ton Mars rover out for a Red Planet spin may be an otherworldly adventure, but it isn't full of heart-pumping action like a video game.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity makes its first test drive Wednesday (Aug. 22), then heads out toward a spot called Glenelg in the coming days. Curiosity's drivers will guide the six-wheeled robot on the 1,300-foot (400-meter) trek to Glenelg ? not with a joystick, but via commands uploaded on a daily basis.

"The rover may be powered off while we're actually doing our planning, and so we'll have eight or more hours to do our sequencing," said Jeff Biesiadecki of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "Then we'll send up a command load to the rover and tell it step-by-step what it needs to do."

Team of drivers

Biesiadecki is one of 16 drivers for Curiosity, which touched down?inside Mars' huge Gale Crater on the night of Aug. 5. The rover is the heart of NASA's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory mission (MSL), which aims to determine if the Red Planet could ever have supported microbial life.

The rover drivers don't just focus on moving Curiosity's wheels, Biesiadecki said. They also operate its 7-foot (2.1-m) robotic arm, which is equipped with a percussive drill and soil-scooping gear, among other tools. And the drivers work to make sure samples snagged by the arm get deposited into the analysis instruments on Curiosity's body. [Latest Mars Photos by Curiosity Rover]

Such activities are generally mapped out a day ahead of time by the rover science team, then written up as code by the drivers.

So Curiosity has its orders when it rises to greet each Martian day, or "sol." The rover team doesn't want to plan things out too far in advance, scientists have said, because priorities can change from sol to sol depending on what Curiosity finds.

Curiosity carries 17 different cameras to help it study and negotiate the Gale Crater terrain. The drivers are particularly interested in photos snapped by Curiosity's four navigation cameras, which sit on its head-like mast.

"We get a stereo view of Mars from those cameras," Biesiadecki told SPACE.com "Those [images] are a key element of helping us decide where we're going to go the next day, and what routes are safe. So basically, after the rover downlinks its imagery, then all our planning takes place."

Some autonomy

While Curiosity is ultimately dependent on its Earth-bound handlers, it does have an autonomous navigation mode that allows it a bit of freedom on the Martian surface.

"The rover is going to be able to choose its own path," Biesiadecki said of this mode. "It will take images as needed to look for obstacles along the way, and drive around them. The disadvantage is that it's much slower for it to do that."

Curiosity's autonomous mode will come in handy when the MSL team wants to send the rover somewhere not covered by the previous day's set of images, Biesiadecki said. But the drivers won't test out this capability right off the bat.

"Our initial drives are going to be in the much more 'do exactly what we tell you to do' mode," Biesiadecki said. "So that will be, 'Drive this many meters; stop, turn this much; take an image; drive this many more meters.'"

NASA officials have called Curiosity the most complex and capable robotic explorer ever sent to another planet. But driving it is similar to operating the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, which landed on the Red Planet in January 2004, Biesiadecki said. Opportunity is still roving across the Martian landscape today, more than eight years later.

"We really tried to build on the experience that we had from MER," he said. "We've got the same drive pattern. We have the same engineering cameras onboard, for instance, and so that dictates a lot of how we do our work." [Latest Mars Photos from Spirit and Opportunity]

Taking it slow

Curiosity's first substantial drives will send it toward Glenelg, where three different types of geological terrain come together in one place.

Though Glenelg is just four football fields away, it'll probably take Curiosity a month or more to get there, mission managers have said. That's because Curiosity will take things slow initially, and scientists may want to stop along the way to do some science work.

Curiosity's ultimate destination, however, is the base of Mount Sharp, the 3.4-mile-high (5.5 kilometers) mountain rising from Gale Crater's center. Mars-orbiting spacecraft have spotted evidence of clays and sulfates in Mount Sharp's foothills, suggesting the area was exposed to liquid water long ago.

The interesting Mount Sharp deposits are about 5 miles (8 km) away from Curiosity's landing site as the crow flies, so getting to them will be quite a trek, especially since the rover is not exactly a speed demon. The MSL team hopes Curiosity can eventually cover 330 feet (100 m) or more of Martian ground in a big day of driving.

Biesiadecki and his fellow drivers are eager to get Curiosity headed toward Glenelg, and then on to Mount Sharp.

"For all rover planners, I think I can safely say we're itching to go, and Curiosity's ready to roll," Biesiadecki said.

Eidul Fitr security: Cellphone services blocked in major cities ? The ...

Servic?es jammed in Karach?i, Quetta, Lahore, Multan till Monday mornin?g.

Interior ministry alerts cellphone companies that it may ask them to cut off communication immediately. PHOTO: FILE

ISLAMABAD:?

The government has decided to suspend cellphone services in at least four major cities in the wake of intelligence reports that terrorists may attempt to target key installations in sensitive areas.

The decision was taken in response to a request by provincial governments on the eve of Eidul Fitr, according to a press statement released by Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Sunday.

?On the request of provincial governments, it was decided that mobile phone services will be suspended in some cities/areas of the respective provinces as per available intelligence,? the statement read.

Cellular company sources confirmed that they were asked by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block services in Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Quetta. Services were to remain blocked from 8pm on Sunday till 11am today (Monday).

PTA could send an additional list of cities where services are to remain blocked during this time, the sources added.

A letter sent from PTA to cellular companies, available with The Express Tribune, stated: ?In order to help law enforcement agencies to improve the security situation and to avoid any untoward incident in different parts of the country, including provincial capitals, mobile services will be required to be closed from evening 19th August, 2012 to morning 20th August, 2012. Therefore, all mobile operators are requested to be ready as the area names will be communicated at a very short notice??

The move to block cellular services is an attempt to ensure security in sensitive areas of Balochistan, as well as to detect acts of terrorism in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, officials
said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf appreciated the efforts made by Interior Minister Rehman Malik to bolster security in the country and achieve headway in investigations into the recent incidents in Gilgit and Kamra airbase. He was talking to the interior minister who called on him at the PM House to update him on the security situation.

He also briefed the PM on measures taken recently by the interior ministry for the improvement of the situation.

The premier, who had earlier met a delegation of overseas Pakistanis from Britain, was told that the fee for new passports was being increased. In response, he told Malik to drop the fee hike plans.

Subsequently the interior minister assured the Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf that overseas Pakistanis would be charged the same as before and no fee hike would be considered.

The prime minister also took up the matter of absence of provision of machine-readable passports and national identity cards for overseas Pakistanis (Nicorp) for those living in Bradford, which was creating hardships for them.

An oasis of comfort : Postnoon

an_oasis_of_comfort_postnoon_news

If you want to catch a break from the noisy, over-crowded, smoke-filled, watering holes of the city, head to Taj Vivanta?s Tease.

Hyderabad as a city has many, many charms. Variety, sadly, is not one of them. Especially when one ventures out to taste its nightlife. If you have a reasonably large friends? circle, you already know what we are talking about. You know exactly what happens where, Monday to Sunday, and that?s where you are. Unfortunately, so is everyone you know.

All of us have been there, and at times like these, we fervently wish for the luxury of more choices. More places that were great and off-the-circuit. It was in this pursuit that we chanced upon a place that turned out to be everything we wanted it to be. Our very own Room of Requirement!

We present, Taj Vivanta?s lounge ? Tease.?

Tease is a different experience on different nights of the week. For the early part, it?s quiet. In muted tones of silver and red, low comfortable seating, music playing discreetly in the background and impeccable service, everything here is signature Vivanta. It?s elegant, it?s classy and best of all, it won?t burn a hole in your pocket. Ideal for a quiet date, catching up with friends or a nice dinner and drinks. The latter half of the week gets busy with their Smooth Operators nights (Fridays, the gentlemen get a complimentary drink for every drink that the accompanying lady orders!) and La femme nights (on Saturdays, we kid you not! All drinks on the house).

If you plan to go on other nights, here are a few recommendations food and drinks-wise. Tease offers an endless array of conventional and quirky drinks. Apart from the best of aperitifs, single malts and beers, their unique ?Teaser? cocktails are worth a try. But the real show-stealers are their local favourites, like Gongura Mojito, Golconda Chai, Aise-eche and Cheppendi.

With everything from muddled Gongura leaves and Irani chai decoction to curry leaves, these are a must try for the more adventurous. Oh and also, an inside secret. Ask at the bar for their off-the-menu selections. We promise, you won?t be disappointed. Lastly, try their incredible refreshing Scarlet Sin, a delectable mix of fresh pomegranate and fruit juices, if you are going non-alcoholic.

Then, onwards to the food. Between Indian, Oriental and Continental appetisers, Tease offers a respectable number of options. Their Continental offerings are much the usual; onion rings, jalapeno poppers and the likes. Their Indian platter (traditional but perfectly done paneer tikka, melt-in-mouth hara bhara kebab and the likes for vegetarians, and chicken tikka, fish cutlets, Japanese panko-style prawns for meat lovers) served with green chutney and delicious sesame dip as ideal accompaniments, is a cut about the rest.

But most surprising is their equivalent of a main course ? a noodle bowl. With options like wok-fried tofu, mushrooms, chilli chicken, seafood and lamb, it?s comfort food at its best. But be warned, it is rich and satisfying, but perhaps might be a little too much after a night of drinks.

Bottom line? For those wanting to catch a break from noisy, over-crowded, smoke-filled, watering holes of the city, Tease serves as an appeasing alternative.

(AP) ? Sylvester Stallone and his beefy buddies have muscled their way to the top of the weekend box office.

Stallone's action hero roundup "The Expendables 2" debuted at No. 1 with $28.8 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. That's down from the $34.8 million start for "The Expendables" two years ago.

The Lionsgate sequel elbowed out another action tale as Universal's "The Bourne Legacy" fell to No. 2 in its second weekend with $17 million. That was a steep 55 percent drop from its $38.1 million opening weekend, though the movie's domestic total climbed to a solid $69.6 million.

Three other wide releases opened to modest business.

Focus Features' animated comedy "ParaNorman, about a boy leading the fight against zombies that rise from the grave, was No. 3 with $14 million.

Sony's music remake "Sparkle," featuring "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston, was No. 5 with $12 million. The update of the 1976 movie centers on three sisters who form a singing group in the late 1960s.

Disney's family fantasy "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" was No. 7 with $10.9 million. The movie stars Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton as a childless couple who become instant parents to a boy that magically appears in their lives.

The newcomers and holdovers combined to lift Hollywood's overall business. Domestic revenues totaled $139 million, up 12 percent from the same weekend last year, when "The Help" led with $20 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Business had been down the previous three weekends this summer, which has fallen short of the record-setting business many studio executives were predicting at the start of the season.

Since the first weekend of May, revenues total $3.9 billion, down 5 percent from last summer's, when Hollywood finished with an all-time high of $4.4 billion for the season, according to Hollywood.com.

This summer delivered huge hits such as "The Avengers" with $617.6 million domestically and "The Dark Knight Rises," which took in $11.1 million this weekend to cross the $400 million mark and edge past "The Hunger Games" to become the year's second-biggest hit.

But other releases such as "Dark Shadows," ''Battleship," ''The Watch" and "Total Recall" were duds that failed to live up to the summer's hype.

With only two weekends left in the season and no obvious hits premiering, it's unlikely that Hollywood will break last summer's record.

"We're winding down the summer and we're in the dog days of August. They're called that for a reason, because we're experiencing the typical summer slowdown, only it seems worse this year," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

"The Expendables 2" also pulled in $17.3 million overseas.

Along with Stallone, "The Expendables 2" cast includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

While the sequel drew smaller crowds than the first movie, distributor Lionsgate noted that business held up better for the new one in its second day. Revenues dipped only 3 percent from Friday to Saturday compared to 11 percent for "The Expendables," according to Lionsgate.

That's a sign that more first-night fans may be talking up the sequel, which also earned better reviews than the original.

"We believe with solid word of mouth and even critical response to the film, that bodes well for the playability," said David Spitz, Lionsgate's head of distribution. "It's the old, it's not a sprint, it's a marathon."

"Sparkle" was the first movie since 1996's "The Preacher's Wife," for Houston, who died in February. The movie was produced on a small $14 million budget, so it will not be a financial burden to Sony despite its modest earnings.

A star's death often boosts audience interest, as happened with Heath Ledger and the Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight" or Michael Jackson and the hit music documentary "Michael Jackson: This Is It."

That did not hold true for "Sparkle," in which Houston had a supporting role as the stern but loving mother of the three singers.

"I don't think that was ever in the cards where there was this sudden interest in seeing the movie," Dergarabedian said. "There didn't seem to be that kind of, 'oh, it's Whitney Houston's last movie, we've got to go see it' attitude."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Expendables 2," $28.8 million ($17.3 million international).

2. "The Bourne Legacy," $17 million ($18.2 million international).

3. "ParaNorman," $14 million ($2 million international).

4. "The Campaign," $13.4 million.

5. "Sparkle," $12 million.

6. "The Dark Knight Rises," $11.1 million ($20.6 million international).

Epson PowerLite 420 Multimedia Projector

By Tony Hoffman

The Epson PowerLite 420 Multimedia Projector is a short-throw data projector in the same series as the Epson PowerLite 435W Multimedia Projector , but with lower resolution, brightness, and price. Although its image quality can't match that of the Epson 435W, it retains most of the latter's features and is a viable choice as a school or business projector.

The PowerLite 420 is an LCD projector, powered by the 3LCD technology that Epson helped develop. It is rated at 2,500 lumens of brightness, and has native XGA (1,024 by 768) resolution, for a 4:3 aspect ratio. It measures 6.2 by 13.6 by 11.7 inches (HWD), including feet, and weighs 8.5 pounds, still light enough to easily carry between classrooms or conference rooms. Epson sells wall and ceiling mounts should you want to permanently install it.

It has a generous selection of ports: two VGA ports for connecting with computers, plus audio-in jacks; 3 RCA jacks for composite video and audio; HDMI; S-video; Ethernet; audio-in, RS232, audio-in; a microphone jack; a USB type A port for connecting to a computer; a USB type B port for a USB thumb drive (to run PC-free presentations) or an optional wireless USB key ($99 direct) that enables Wi-Fi connectivity.

Testing
As a short-throw projector, the PowerLite 420 has the advantage of projecting a fairly large image when placed rather close to the screen. Epson gives the range of image size and projector distance as 50 to 108 inches at 1.9 to 4 feet from the screen. The PowerLite 420's image filled our 60-inch-diagonal test screen from a little less than three feet away. Its 2,500 lumens were enough to hold up to a fair amount of ambient light.

Data image quality was suitable for typical business or classroom presentations, though not in situations where exacting color is necessary. In general, colors looked bright and reasonably true; the issue was frequent mild red or green tinting on lighter backgrounds. On a few images it was significant enough to be distracting. Changing color modes didn't help; switching from a VGA to HDMI connection reduced the red tinting but didn't solve the issue. Type was a little more blurred at smaller sizes than is typical for a data projector, but still within the normal range.

Video was of a quality suitable for showing short clips as a part of a presentation. On the plus side, as an LCD projector it's free of the rainbow artifacts often seen in video with DLP-based projectors.? I did frequently see what looked like a subtle hatching to the background. Also, the same sort of green tinting that I noted in my data image discussion was occasionally visible, mostly in bright areas. I noticed some posterization?abrupt shifts in shading where they should be gradual?and some skin tones seemed on the pasty side.

Audio provided by the projector's built-in 16W speaker was loud enough to fill a mid-size classroom or conference room. There was a bit of distortion at higher volumes, so in my testing I turned the volume down about halfway, where it was still reasonably loud.

Admirably, lamp lifetime is on the long side, up to 6,000 hours in Eco mode, 5,000 hours in normal mode. The projector is backed by a 2-year limited warranty.

For $200 more than the PowerLite 420, the Epson 435W provides a native WXGA (1,280 by 800) resolution and a rated brightness of 3,000 lumens. Its video image quality was somewhat better than the 420. The Optoma TW610ST and NEC NP-M300WS , both Editors' Choice WXGA projectors, provide better data image quality than the two Epsons. Unlike the other projectors mentioned here, the Optoma is 3D capable, but as a DLP projector its video is subject to potentially annoying rainbow artifacts.

The Epson PowerLite 420 is a capable short-throw projector, with many connection options and with a long-lasting light source. Though we weren't blown away by its image quality, it's certainly usable for workaday business or classroom use. If you need better image quality, higher-resolution short-throw projectors are available for not much more money.

Ziv-Aflibercept gets FDA approval | Fight Colorectal Cancer

Ziv-Aflibercept Approved as 2nd line treatment for metastatic CRC??

For the first time in more than five years, the FDA has approved a new drug for certain patients who have metastatic colorectal cancer.

The FDA has approved ZALTRAP? (ziv-aflibercept) to be used with FOLFIRI as a ?second-line? treatment for patients with stage IV colorectal cancer whose cancer got worse despite an initial oxaliplatin-based treatment (e.g. FOLFOX).?

Trial evidence

This FDA approval is based on the Phase III VELOUR trial, which studied 1226 patients whose metastatic cancer had progressed during or within six months of receiving the combination chemotherapy FOLFOX, with or without Avastin? (bevacizumab). Patients were randomly assigned to get FOLFIRI alone or FOLFIRI plus Zaltrap. Results showed:

  • Improved overall survival from 12 to 13.5 months
  • Progression-free survival increased from 4.7 to 6.9 months
  • The addition of ziv-aflibercept doubled the response rate from 10% with FOLFIRI up to a 20% response rate when Zaltrap was added.

The study also showed improved response even in the 30 percent of patients who had previously taken Avastin? (bevacuzimab) with FOLFOX.

How it works

Like its cousin Avastin, the new drug Zaltrap is a biologic (targeted) protein that blocks the development of new blood vessels needed by a fast-growing tumor. Zaltrap disguises itself as the receptor, basically setting a trap (hence its name) that captures and blocks three different growth factors (two VEGFs and placental growth factor).

Side effects

Perhaps because it has a broader spectrum of action than Avastin, Zaltrap seems to cause more side effects. The FDA approval comes with a ?black box? warning of rare but serious or life-threatening side effects such as severe bleeding, gastrointestinal perforation (a hole in the stomach or intestine), and delayed wound healing. But the most common side effects seen in trials were low white blood cells, diarrhea, high blood pressure, mouth sores, fatigue and muscle weakness.

Further research coming

For this notoriously hard-to-treat cancer, even an improved ?mean? survival time (the middle point between shortest and longest response) of just 1.5 months is a significant scientific advance. Plus it gives a second treatment option for people with metastatic colorectal cancer.

Now researchers will carefully study patients who responded particularly well, looking for clues about why, how, and in whom Zaltrap works best.?Other researchers with?the Phase II AFFIRM clinical trial? are studying whether Zaltrap could be used with FOLFOX as an initial (first-line) treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer.

Other clinical data hints that some patients might benefit from continuing Avastin even if their cancer progresses. Dr. David Kerr, president of the European Society of Medical Oncology, told Medscape that ?We will need head-to-head trials to sort out [the] dilemma? of when to keep patients on Avastin or try switching to Zaltrap.

Another new drug in the pipeline for stage IV colorectal cancer this year is the pill Regorafenib. With positive early trial results, the FDA put Regorafenib on the ?priority review? list in late June, meaning approval could come later this year.

Patient take-away

The new drug ziv-aflibercept will be commercially available the week of August 20th, the manufacturer told Fight Colorectal Cancer. With FDA approval, this drug should be covered?by Medicare and most insurers. Oncologists now can begin considering Zaltrap as an option for some patients with stage IV disease. But it won?t be a simple black-and-white decision.

For example, Dr. John Marshall (head of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington DC) described his?decision process to? Medscape Medical News?:? ?If I had a very stable patient with metastatic cancer on frontline therapy with just subtle progression after 12 months, I?d probably keep that patient on bevacizumab (Avastin). However, in a patient who is not having a good response and who has rapidly progressing cancer, I might consider trying ziv-aflibercept as a different approach.?

And people with?the wild-type (WT, or nonmutated) KRAS gene have a third option?either Erbitux? (cetuximab) or Vectibix? (panitumumab). In July, the FDA approved Erbitux?in combination with FOLFIRI for first-line treatment of patients with that type of metastatic colorectal cancer.

So a new drug option for people with stage IV colorectal cancer is great news. But you need to review your specific situation with your doctor?previous treatment and response, plus your general health status and ability to tolerate possible side effects.

Saudi Arabia orders its citizens to leave Lebanon

BEIRUT (AP) ? Saudi Arabia has ordered its citizens to leave Lebanon immediately, citing fear of kidnappings by Shiites angry over rebels in Syria taking prisoners from Lebanon and Iran.

The statement by the Saudi Embassy in Beirut was published on the official Saudi news agency Wednesday. It urges its citizens to leave immediately and warns travelers against visiting Lebanon, a popular destination for Gulf residents in the summer.

Armed Shiite clansmen in Lebanon say they have taken 20 Syrians hostages until their relative seized by rebels in Syria is freed. Syria rebels claim to be holding a Lebanese man they accuse of being a member of Hezbollah, the Shiite Lebanese group allied with Syria and Iran.

Libya elects former Gadhafi foe interim president

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? Libya's newly formed national assembly elected former opposition leader Mohammed el-Megarif as the country's interim president on Friday, the latest move to establish a democratically based leadership after decades of rule by deposed dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

El-Megarif won 113 votes to defeat another opposition leader and human rights lawyer, Ali Zidan, who won 85 votes from the 200-member General National Congress, an assembly created in the first nationwide election since Gadhafi's ouster and killing last year. Both men had been diplomats who defected and fought Gadhafi's regime while living in exile since the 1980s.

"This is a historic moment and no one is a loser," said Hussein al-Ansari, an independent lawmaker speaking after the victor was announced. "The two are nationalist fighters who battled the regime."

El-Megarif, who authored a series of books on Gadhafi's repressive policies, lived as a wanted fugitive for years, and was the leader of the country's oldest armed opposition movement, the National Front for the Salvation of Libya. The movement made several attempts to end Gadhafi's 42-year rule, sometimes by plotting assassination attacks including a well- known and daring 1984 assault on Bab al-Aziziyah, the late dictator's fortified compound in Tripoli.

The regime cracked down on the group, executing and arresting many of its members. Many fled abroad where they worked as political activists. El-Megarif's movement organized the first Libyan opposition conference in London in 2005 and called for the overthrow of Gadhafi's regime at a time when other groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood, accepted Gadhafi's outreach to the opposition.

Upon his return to Libya after last year's armed revolution, he formed a new party, the National Front, which sees Islam as a broad guideline to the state's affairs, but does not mention the implementation of Islamic Sharia law. However since el-Megarif's old movement was founded by several Islamists, and ex-members of the Muslim Brotherhood, he is seen as close to Islamist parties.

El-Megarif will hold the office until a new constitution is in place sometime next year. He replaces Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, head of the outgoing transitional council, which was disbanded Wednesday when Abdul-Jalil handed power to the new assembly.

The body, which voted just after midnight, was elected in July in a turnout that exceeded 60 percent.

It will choose a prime minister within 30 days, then decide on a mechanism to select a 60-member panel tasked with writing a constitution. The assembly had been charged with forming the panel until July, when in a last minute move the outgoing transitional council declared that the panel will be elected directly by the people.

Lawmakers however have said that the assembly has the right to reverse the move.

cabinet refacing - Kitchen Remodels: Replacing or Cabinet Refacing?

Is your kitchen about ready for a facelift? Whether you're thinking about addressing a few minor details or tackling a complete overhaul, deciding what to do with your cabinetry is of primary importance. Some experts will tell you that replacing your cabinetry can consume nearly 50 percent of your budget. If that's the case, why not consider cabinet refacing if that's an option?

Many homeowners today choose to reface their cabinets rather than completely replacing them in order to save money. However, that's not the only benefit to refacing. Cabinet refacing also tends to be a much more convenient alternative.

If you're not sure what cabinet refacing entails, here are a few simple details involved in the process.

1. Refinishing (or painting) existing cabinets and drawer fronts? 2. Installing new veneer (or wood) over cabinets and drawer fronts ? 3. Installing new cabinet doors, drawer fronts and hardware 4. Sanding interior of cabinets and drawers, as well as painting or staining for completely new look

Cabinet refacing tends to make kitchen remodeling much more convenient, as well as affordable. Replacing your cabinets can cost at least two to three times the cost of refacing cabinetry. With cabinet refacing you avoid having to go through the demolition phase while remodeling your kitchen. Not to mention that your kitchen can remain functional while the refacing process is going on.

However, cabinet refacing isn't always an option. Because the process involves using the original boxes and other materials from the existing cabinetry, if the wood is in bad shape it will have to be replaced. Surprisingly, older cabinetry (pre-1980's) usually winds up being the best candidate for cabinet refacing.

The reason older cabinetry is a better candidate is because of the materials that were used. Typically the older materials were of better quality, making them much more durable. When making older cabinets they used 3/4- inch plywood. Today many companies use a particle board or hybrid material that tends to wear much faster.

If you're considering a kitchen remodel, cabinet refacing might help you save on your budget. While helping your save time and money, you might have the ability to complete everything on your wish list. Why spend the money to replace perfectly good cabinets? You can still get the look you want by refacing your cabinetry.

If you think you may want to consider refacing your cabinets, contact Granite Transformations for a free quote. Trust me, you'll be glad you saved the thousands of dollars you might have spent on new cabinets for your kitchen.

Record crowd set for US-Japan women's final

2012 Olympic Soccer Venues

LONDON (Reuters) - The women's soccer final between the United States and Japan will smash the Olympic women's attendance record on Thursday after a frenzied buying spree for tickets for the gold medal decider at Wembley.

A crowd of at least 83,000 is guaranteed after fans snapped up 5,000 tickets following the defending champions' dramatic 4-3 extra-time win over Canada and world champions Japan's enthralling 2-1 win over France in the semi-finals on Monday.

The Olympic women's soccer attendance record was set in 1996 when 76,489 fans watched the final between the United States and China at the Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia.

The same attendance is officially recorded by football's governing body FIFA for the bronze medal match between Norway and Brazil in the same stadium earlier in the day.

FIFA confirmed on its Twitter feed (@FIFAmedia) that 5,000 tickets were sold in the late rush, meaning Thursday's game will also attract the greatest number of fans to watch a women's match in Britain.

The previous record of 70,584 was set earlier in this London Games when Britain played Brazil at Wembley on July 29 and that in turn was the highest number since 53,000 watched a match in 1920.

A FIFA spokesman said: "We are absolutely delighted with the crowds at the tournament for both men and women - especially the women's matches. It proves what a vital and robust part soccer plays in the Olympic Games - and always has done."

Critics have long said soccer should not be in the Games if Olympic gold is seen as less valuable than World Cup glory.

The record for a women's World Cup final was set in Los Angeles in July 1999 when 90,185 saw the U.S. beat China at the Rosebowl.

Thursday's Olympic final, with the U.S. bidding for a third successive gold, is a re-run of last year's World Cup final when Japan became world champions after beating the U.S. on penalties in Frankfurt in front of 48,817 fans.

Although some tickets for the London Olympic soccer tournament were not sold in the early rounds, the current accumulative total for both men and women's games stands at 1,951,707 - with 569,128 watching women's matches so far.

A record total of 740,014 spectators watched the women's soccer tournament in Beijing four years ago. With the final and bronze-medal match between France and Canada at Coventry still to come, London's final total will be around 660,000.

Arlo White and Brandi Chastain break down Team USA's thrilling win over Canada in the semifinals and look ahead to their World Cup rematch with Japan in the final.

Is salvage cryotherapy really as safe and effective as some suggest ...

There have been an increasing number of articles published in the recent past suggesting salvage cryotherapy as an excellent option for the treatment of men with progressive prostate cancer after failure of first-line radiation therapy.

A new paper by Wenke et al. has offered outcome data from a consecutive series of 396 men treated with salvage cryotherapy between October 1994 and August 2011). All patients had progressive prostate cancer after first-line radiation therapy or first-line cryotherapy. An additional commentary on this paper can be found on the Medscape web site.

The basic results of this study are as follows:

  • 328/396 patients had follow-up data sufficient for meaningful evaluation.
  • The average (median) time from primary therapy to disease recurrence was 55 months (range, 0.0 to 183.6 months).
  • At the time of salvage cryotherapy
    • The average (median) PSA level of the patients was 4.0 ng/ml (range, 0.1 to 112.4 ng/ml).
    • The average (median) time from primary therapy was 67.5 months (range 7.0 to 212.7 months).
  • After completion of salvage cryotherapy
    • The average (median) follow-up was 47.8 months (range 1.6 to 203.5 months).
    • The average (median) PSA nadir was 0.2 ng/ml (range, 0.01 to 70.70 ng/ml).
    • The average (median) time to PSA nadir was 2.6 months (range, 2.0 to 67.3 months).
  • During the post-salvage cryotherapy follow-up period
    • 35 patients (10.7 percent) died of prostate cancer.
    • 72 patients (22.3 percent) died of non-prostate cancer-related causes.
  • Estimated survival data at a follow-up of 5 years after salvage therapy are
    • 91 percent for prostate cancer-specific survival
    • 74 percent for overall survival
    • 63 percent for biochemical progression-free (i.e., disease-free) survival
  • Estimated survival data at a follow-up of 10 years after salvage therapy are
    • 79 percent for prostate cancer-specific survival
    • 45 percent for overall survival
    • 35 percent for biochemical progression-free survival
  • Only the nadir PSA level after salvage cryotherapy was predictive of risk for recurrence and disease-free survival in multivariate analysis.
  • Significant complications requiring further intervention ?were rare? and included
    • Urethral strictures in 15 cases (4.6 percent)
    • Bladder outlet obstruction in 11 patients (3.4 percent)
    • Rectourethral or urethroperineal fistulae in 6 patients (1.8 percent)

The authors also state that:

  • 55/328 patients had focal as opposed to whole-gland salvage cryotherapy
  • Among the 55 men who had focal cryotherapy
    • The average (median) nadir PSA level was 0.44 ng/ml (range, 0.04 to 20.1 ng/ml).
    • 27/55 patients (49 percent) had a second recurrence
    • Prostate cancer-specific survival at 10 years was 83 percent.
    • Overall survival at 10 years was 81 percent
    • Biochemical recurrence-free survival at 10 years was 42 percent

It is not entirely clear from the abstract of this paper what the average age or the age-range of the patients was at the time of salvage therapy. The median age and the age range given in the abstract may refer to ages at the time of primary therapy as opposed to ages at the time of salvage therapy.

Furthermore, there is no mention of some predictable consequences of salvage cryotherapy such as incontinence and erectile dysfunction that significantly impact quality of life. It is likely that the incidence of such side effects is very high among men who have received both radiotherapy and salvage cryotherapy or primary and salvage cryotherapy.

Based on their data, the authors conclude that,

Our analysis confirms [salvage cryotherapy] as an effective treatment option for patients failing primary therapy. Patients experienced excellent survival outcome and minimal associated morbidity after [salvage cryotherapy]. Focal [salvage cryotherapy] is an efficacious treatment for properly selected patients.

The problem with this conclusion is that it simply doesn?t seem (at least to us) to be justified by the available data.

Modern focal and whole-gland salvage cryotherapy are, quite certainly, appropriate options for carefully selected men with progressive disease after first-line treatment with radiotherapy, cryotherapy, and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). However, this paper does not justify the conclusion stated above, and the authors would have been wiser to have offered some documentary evidence about appropriate patient selection based on these data than to make statements like the following (taken from the article on the Medscape web site):

Salvage treatment of the prostate with cryosurgery has been shown to be effective in many patients; it can be repeated if necessary, and rarely has side effects. We are excited to offer this therapy, as it appears to be effective and carries a favorable side effect profile.

This seems to The ?New? Prostate Cancer InfoLink to be a massive over-generalization. The critical question for most of us is not whether salvage therapy can be done. It can. The key question is, ?For whom is it appropriate and safe, with a high probability of a good outcome??
