Lest we forget: US military still uses horses and bayonets

President Barack Obama, in a pithy riposte to Governor Mitt Romney during the October 22 presidential debate, alluded to obvious changes in military technology of the last century. Republican candidate Romney supports a buildup of the nation's military, particularly the Air Force and Navy, as a means of assuring the security of the country as it faces increased challenges from piracy and Chinese regional ambitions.?

When Romney noted that the U.S. Navy now has fewer ships than it did in 1917, Obama responded that the U.S. has "fewer horses and bayonets" than it did nearly one hundred years ago.?

Obama's quip was true enough and certainly would have made points among high school sophmores. But he did not indicate clearly how he will deal with China, aside from talk about "pressure" and engagement. He batted aside concerns that China's ambitions are growing, just as the United States is becoming further indebted to that Asian country.

As a point of fact, bayonets and horses, as well as swords, still form a compliment in the American panoply. Horses draw the caissons bearing the mortal remains of American service personnel to their final rest at Arlington Cemetery. The infantry guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier still wield bayonets along with their rifles. Some soldiers and marines still receive training in the use of the bayonet as part of their martial arts. Bayonets are featured as part of the the 'Warrior's Cross' that plays a part in tributes to fallen soldiers and marines. Swords are still part of the inventory of arms in the Navy, for instance, and are found displayed in the ward rooms of various warships.

Obama's dismissiveness may have won some points with his followers, and he still might pull off this election. But Obama should bear in mind that witty remarks such as his are lost in a world increasingly violent and unpredictable. Unfortunately, his words will not be as persuasive with China - or Iran - as the point of a bayonet.

Mormon church holds open house

HOLLIDAYSBURG - From the Broadway stage to the run for the White House, the Mormon religion is in the spotlight, and a local ward has seized the opportunity among the public interest.

The Altoona Ward Meetinghouse of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 778 Brush Mountain Road held an open house for the public Tuesday evening.

Bishop Jere Cross estimated about 50 people showed up within the first half hour of the open house.

Kevin Brady (right)?of Hollidaysburg, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, explains his faith to Anna Marie and Joe Rodkey of Altoona during an open house at the church?s Brush Mountain Road meetinghouse.

Cross said a kind of "Mormon moment" is taking place with the musical, "The Book of Mormon," and Mitt Romney, who is Mormon, running for the presidency.

They wanted to answer questions for people, he said.

Mormons believe in religious freedom and are politically neutral, Cross said. They do not endorse nor oppose Romney, he said.

But that doesn't stop outsiders from associating the religion with the presidential hopeful.

Gary Neuder, who is doing missionary work at the local ward, said someone came up to him and spoke of Romney's honesty. Another person, after noticing a nameplate Neuder was wearing, said, "I want you to know we're praying for him."

Joe and Anna Marie Rodkey of Altoona came to the open house to learn more about the religion of the man they are supporting for president, Joe said.

They had heard, among others, about the cult-like references concerning the religion.

Kendal M. Sheets, who co-wrote the book, "Book of Mormon, Book of Lies," said in an email that the Mormon church has a history of racism, sexism and homophobia. He said Romney needs to address those issues and others.

"It's time for Romney to answer to his faith," he said. "The American people deserve to know where he stands."

Sheets said women cannot join the Mormon priesthood, and that, while President Obama has been clear on where he stands with women, he thinks Romney has not.

Throughout the Hollidaysburg church's hallways hung messages addressing such topics as polygamy, which Cross said hasn't been practiced in 130 years and for which members can be ex-communicated.

The church is not sexist, Cross said. Although they cannot become ordained in priesthood, women serve in leadership roles, as missionaries, teachers and preach from the pulpit.

"We walk side by side with women," Cross said. "We're equal."

Women and men do separate after services and school on Sundays. Women go to the Relief Society, the oldest and largest women's organization worldwide with 5.2 million members in 179 countries today. They learn homemaking skills such as baking bread and canning. Men can go to priesthood training starting at the age of 12. Cross and another woman said it was about self-reliance, and whoever wanted to learn was welcome.

Cross said it would be OK if a man wanted to go to Relief Society and the woman the priesthood training, but no one has ever asked to do so.

Mormons believe marriage is a sacrament between a man and a woman, Cross said. But they also believe everyone "should be treated with respect and dignity," a sign said.

They do not believe in pre-marital sex between any of the sexes, he said.

"We don't look down on people who are homosexuals. We know it's a real challenge for them," Cross said. "We believe it's a tendency that shouldn't be acted on."

Sheets said Mormons have a history of large contributions to campaigns against gay marriage, like Proposition 8 in California.

"For a church that claims to be politically neutral, that's a lot of money in clear support of a political issue," Sheets said. "It's another classic case of the LDS Church claiming one thing while doing the exact opposite."

They also deny the accusation of racism within the church.

Cross said 35 years ago the practice of not ordaining African American men ended, and all men were then able to go into the priesthood. It wasn't clear how such a practice got started, he said.

Sheets said church leaders "have remained largely mum on the issue," and it is only a guess as to whether sections of the Book of Mormon referring to "blackness" and black skin in a negative manner led to the church's earlier ban.

The church is "completely against any type of racism or segregation," Cross said. "Everybody's equal."

Tax Lies Told to Graduate Students | Evolving Personal Finance

My little university community service project for this fall is working with a staff member at my university to compile a comprehensive reference document for graduate students preparing to file their taxes. ?The purpose is to help graduate students make sense of the tax-related forms they receive (or don?t receive!) ? with lots of quotes and links to the IRS website ? so they can correctly figure out their school-related taxable incomes and deductions/credits. ?For those of you who have never received fellowship income, you might not realize how confusing this can be!

?

The challenge regarding this situation is that the university staff members are strictly prohibited from giving tax advice. ?That means the people who know the most about graduate student compensation have had their hands tied with regard to helping students even when they come to them for with very specific questions ? and professional tax preparers, it seems, are almost universally untrained to deal with the unique tax situation of graduate students.

?

Through these conversations, I have noted four?lies that I anecdotally know some graduate students have been told by their classmates and tax preparers. ?Unfortunately, for this document we are creating we cannot make direct statements to counter these lies. ?But as this blog is unconnected with my university (and if you haven?t figured it out, I?m not a professional and you shouldn?t trust me!) so I?m going to make those statements! ?I?m very curious to hear if any of you have directly encountered a situation wherein one of these was not true (and you?re sure the filer was correct).

?

1. ?You don?t have to pay income taxes. / Your income isn?t taxable. / If nothing was withheld, you don?t owe any taxes.

?

If you?re paid a stipend that you?re free to use for your living expenses and such, it is taxable! ?I?m not talking about fellowship that pay tuition or anything like that, I?m talking about money that you don?t have to use for qualified tuition and fees. ?Your income may be so low that you don?t owe taxes, but you still need to file. ?Not every income type will be reported to the IRS by your university ? just because they don?t report doesn?t mean you don?t have to! ?And you may or may not have any automatically taxes withheld for you during the year, but all that means is that you have to file quarterly estimated taxes, not that you can get out of paying.

?

2. ?You received a 1099; that means you are self-employed.

?

Your employer is your university ? you are not self-employed! ?(Well, okay, you might be self-employed as well, but that?s aside from your role as a graduate student.) ?Being paid with a 1099-MISC looks like contractor income for self-employed individuals (box 7), but a lesser-known usage of the form is for fellowship and scholarship income (box 3).

?

3. ?You can deduct tuition if you receive a statement about it from your university, even if you didn?t actually pay it.

?

Even if your 1098-T or some other letter makes it seem that you paid tuition, you can?t ignore the reality that the university paid it on your behalf (if that?s the case). ?If you didn?t actually pay it, you can?t take it as a deduction! ?The goal is to have your 1040 accurately reflect your taxable income, not to lower your tax burden by making it look like you paid your own tuition.

?

4. You don?t owe any taxes because you didn?t receive any official tax forms.

?

It rather makes sense that if you don?t receive any IRS forms reporting your income ? and particularly if it hasn?t been reported to the IRS ? that you are absolved of your responsibility of paying taxes ? not so! ?I mean, just keep in mind whether you were paid (above tuition and fees) or not, you know? ?I know of two tax situations wherein a student at my university would be paid taxable income yet not receive any official-looking forms by my university. ?1) If a student is paid through her Bursar account and the amount exceeds the qualified tuition and fees, she will not receive a 1098-T documenting this and yet does need to file/pay taxes, so she needs to check the transactions in her Bursar account to calculate her taxable income. ?2) If a student has fellowship income and does not have taxes withheld, he will receive a ?courtesy letter? from our university in January instead of a 1099-MISC and that?s what he has to use to calculate his taxable income. ?Your university may handle these situations differently.

?

Can you contradict any of the above ?lies?? ?(Correct me before I get further along in this project!) ?Why do you think there is so much misinformation floating around concerning graduate student taxes? ?What are the names of the tax forms you have received as a graduate student (mine are 1099-MISC and W-2)? ?Have you ever received a courtesy letter and in what situation?

?

X2 HEHC Rotary Engine Can Run Multiple Fuels, Requires No ...

The nature of the internal combustion engine is harnessing the power of thousands of small, controlled explosions. Alas, most of the energy created is wasted as heat, but a new rotary engine design can almost double the thermal efficiency of almost any kind of fuel while requiring fewer moving parts for a light, powerful, and simple engine design.

Called the X2 High Efficiency Hybrid Cycle engine, it is being developed by researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy?LiquidPiston as a project aimed at making a more efficient combustion engine. Right now, most combustion engines can only achieve between 30 and 40% efficiency, which a majority of the energy created becoming waste heat. Today?s engines also have more valves, camshafts, and other complicated moving parts that make them heavy and costly to build.

The X2 HEHC engine combines the benefits of the four different kinds of combustion engines. The X2 has a high-compression ratio like diesel engines, the constant volume combustion of Otto cycle engines, the over-expansion to atmospheric pressure ala Atkinson cycle engines (commonly used in hybrids) and the internal cooling system using air or water of Rankine cycle engines.

What researchers have come up with is an engine that is quieter than current motors, delivers up to 58% thermal efficiency, and an extremely lightweight design that makes around 2 horsepower per 1 lb. of engine weight. Combined with fewer moving parts, it makes for a simple-yet-effective engine design that could lead to big fuel economy gains.

Researchers the world over are looking at new engine designs, from opposed-piston to wave disks to super steam engines. But none have tried to combine the benefits of the four different engine cycles into a single working unit. It?s a bold idea to be sure, one that would offer the world a cheap, lightweight engine that can run a multitude of different fuels.

There is currently a working prototype-grade version of the X2 engine, and researchers believe that they could get as much as 74% thermal efficiency from this engine design. This could triple the fuel economy of even the most efficient cars on today?s market. Imagine what that would do to oil prices and the automotive market. Sounds promising, but the X2 is still a long ways out. Will it ever move beyond the lab?

Pippa Middleton: It's "Startling" to Be Known for My Famous Butt ...

Pippa Middleton speaks!

The typically tight-lipped party planner, 29, recently chatted with the U.K.'s Mail on Sunday to promote her new book, Celebrate. Pippa also opened up about being thrust into the spotlight after her sister, Kate Middleton, 30, married Prince William, 30, in April 2011.

PHOTOS: Pippa Middleton's world-famous figure

"It is a bit startling to achieve global recognition before the age of 30 on account of your sister, your brother-in-law and your bottom," Pippa said. "One day I might be able to make sense of this. In the meantime I think it's fair to say that it has its upside and its downside."

Pippa added, "I certainly have opportunities many can only dream of ? but in most ways I'm a typical girl in her 20s trying to forge a career and represent herself in what can sometimes seem rather strange circumstances. I am by nature an optimist so I tend to concentrate on the advantages. One of the most attractive has been the chance to publish Celebrate."

PHOTOS: Pippa Middleton's sophisticated street style

The triathlete hopes her book will give the public an inside look into who she is and what she does for a living. "I know many of you will pick up the book out of nothing more than curiosity," she writes in Celebrate. "I can assure you that it feels even stranger to me than it probably does to you to have seen so much written about me when I have done so little to paint a picture of myself."

"This is my first chance to do that and I've enjoyed every minute of it," she writes. "The book is designed to be a comprehensive guide to home entertaining, based on my experience in my family's business Party Pieces and work for London-based events company Table Talk."

The Mail on Sunday is running 24 pages of excerpts from Celebrate in its You magazine. Further excerpts will appear in next week's issue.

Combined pesticide exposure affects bumblebee colony success

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? Individual worker behaviour and colony success are both affected when bees are exposed to a combination of pesticides, according to research conducted by Dr Richard Gill and Dr Nigel Raine at Royal Holloway, University of London.

This research, published in Nature, investigated social bumblebee colonies which rely on the collective performance of numerous individual worker bees. It showed that chronic exposure to two commonly-used pesticides (a neonicotinoid and a pyrethroid), at concentrations approximating field-level exposure, impaired natural foraging behaviour and increased worker mortality. This led to significant reductions in colony success, and increased rates of colony failure.

Bees are typically exposed to numerous pesticides when collecting pollen and nectar from crops, and this is the first study to examine the potential effects of exposure to a combination of pesticides under realistic field conditions.

While recent studies have investigated the role of pesticides on either individual bee behaviours, or the impact on whole colonies, how changes to individual behaviour could have knock-on effects for the colony has not previously been shown.

Dr Raine said: "There is an urgent need to understand the reasons behind current bee declines as they are essential pollinators of many agricultural crops and wild flowers. We rely on these insects to produce most of the food we eat and maintain the landscapes we enjoy."

"Previous studies investigating the possible role of pesticides in current bee declines have focused on honeybees, but it is also crucial that we understand how pesticides affect other bee species," added Dr Gill.

This study mimicked realistic scenarios in which 40 early stage bumblebee colonies received four-week exposure to two pesticides that are frequently encountered when foraging on flowering crops: the neonicotinoid 'Imidacloprid' and the pyrethroid '?-cyhalothrin'.

Imidacloprid was provided in a sucrose solution at levels that could be found in nectar and ?-cyhalothrin was administered following label guidance for field spray applications. Bees were able to forage in the field providing a realistic behavioural setting, and the foraging behaviour of individual workers was recorded using radio frequency identification (RFID) tagging technology.

The researchers found that bees exposed to imidacloprid were less able to forage effectively, particularly when it came to collecting pollen. This meant treated colonies had less food available to them, so could not raise as many new workers. On average, the percentage of workers leaving the colony and then getting lost was 55% higher in those receiving imidacloprid than those that were not exposed to pesticides. The results of this study also indicate that combinatorial exposure to pesticides increases the tendency of bee colonies to fail.

Dr Gill commented that: "The novelty of this study is that we show how the sublethal effects of pesticide exposure affects individual bee behaviour with serious knock-on consequences for the performance of the colony as a whole."

Dr Raine added: "Policymakers need to consider the evidence and work together with regulatory bodies to minimize the risk to all bees caused by pesticides, not just honeybees. Currently pesticide usage is approved based on tests looking at single pesticides. However, our evidence shows that the risk of exposure to multiple pesticides needs to be considered, as this can seriously affect colony success."

The Insect Pollinators Initiative is joint-funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Defra, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the Scottish Government and the Wellcome Trust. It is managed under the auspices of the Living with Environmental Change (LWEC) partnership.

Professor Douglas Kell, Chief Executive of BBSRC, said: "Bumblebees play an important role in pollination, working earlier in the morning and later into the evening than many bees. Understanding the threats to all insect pollinators is vital if we are to ensure we mitigate the impact of their decline on the production of agricultural and horticultural crops. The results of this study contribute to a wider initiative to help inform strategies for securing the futures of all insect pollinators."

Pratim D.Gupta's Paanch Adhyay ? When film reviewer turns filmmaker

It?s a weird position to be in. And in India it?s almost like a joke because people instantly quote two names to get their points across ? Khalid Mohamed and Samar Khan. Remember how Subhash Ghai reviewed Fiza? The precedent is bad but who said that we can?t change the future. So what happens when a film reviewer changes track and moves to the opposite side? Over to Pratim D Gupta, who has been reviewing films for The Telegraph for last few years and has now made his directorial debut with a bengali film titled Paanch Adhyay which has just released. The film stars Priyanshu Chatterjee, Dia Mirza and Soumitra Chatterjee.

This is so damn difficult to write. I have been staring at this empty word file on my Macbook screen for the last couple of hours. That?s like the time I usually take to write my film reviews every Friday.

Any more time and that page wouldn?t reach you the next day. But then every Friday I am your man at the movies. For this Friday, I am the man behind your movie. Perhaps the only way I can put this together is if I tell you about Paanch Adhyay in five chapters.

Chapter 1: The write of passage?

It was always all about cinema waala love. From Uttam Kumar?s cigarette smoke swirl in Nayak to Sanjay Dutt?s eyepatch in Khalnayak, from James Bond?s black tuxedo in every film to Govinda?s yellow pants in every film, I chewed and chomped anything that spelt cinema. So the three-figure JEE rank was dunked and I got into film studies. Soon the Rays and Ratnams had company in Kurosawa and Kieslowski, Tarkovsky and Tarantino.

The world was passing by at 24 frames per second. I had to jump cut. I chose to write myself into the script.

Watch movies, write about them, speak to the guys who make them and try and understand the craft a little more. So incredibly I was attending the best customised film school possible; where I could speak to A.R. Rahman about the core of his scores, discuss the finer nuances of acting with Irrfan Khan, debate shot lengths with Ashok Mehta or just discuss life in cinema and cinema in life with Farhan Akhtar.

One of my earliest on-set assignments was Pradeep Sarkar?s Parineeta shoot in Siliguri. And I remember the film?s leading man, who became Mr Bebo a couple of days back, telling me with a chuckle: ?Making a film is like waging a war.? I didn?t fully understand it then. No one knows it better than me now.

Chapter 2: The man who almost made a movie?

I started writing a script in mid-2008 because a filmmaker friend from here liked the idea and promised that he would get me funding for it.

The script happened, the promise wasn?t kept.

I took the script to other producers; everyone shooed me away. Since it was lying ready, I made an English version of it and sent it to international screenwriting competitions. It got selected as one of six scripts at the Locarno International Film Festival and went on to become the first Indian project at the Independent Film Week in New York.

Still no funding came through.

Next a Mumbai-based producer committed to fund the film at Film Bazaar in Goa and even got a French co-producer. I happily got a cast and crew together ? the very best talent from here in Calcutta. The pre-production started and locations were scouted. And then the man from Mumbai stopped taking my calls and replying to my mails. When I bumped into him at a social do, he promptly fled from the party.

I actually started believing that I would be remembered (laughed at, really) as that guy who came closest to making a movie but could never make one. You know how artistes love romancing the pain. The pleasure of putting your head down on a wet pillow every night.

Chapter 3: Traces of treason?

Of course at that same time there was something equally terrible happening on the personal front. Everything was shutting down around me. I thought to myself the only way out of this is to write a new script. Yes another very romantic way of looking at things ? you got to do what you can do. A batsman has to bat his way back to form; a writer has to write.

That?s how Paanch Adhyay was born. It was called Resh then. Resh as in traces? traces of a relationship. I wanted to narrate what I was going through with a what-could-have-happened twist to the tale. I wanted to tell a love story like a thriller. And because I wanted to go berserk with the structure, I wanted to keep the story simple. Very, very simple.

I slit my veins onto the script. This time I was not writing to get the film made; I was writing to get a move on in life. Writing Resh felt gratifyingly cathartic. I finished the first draft and there it stayed saved in a folder on my lappie. It?s job was done. Or so I thought.

Chapter 4: Moment by moment?

I knew of Kaustuv Roy as a man who threw big parties even though I had never attended one. He called me one fine evening ? I still remember I was in a taxi and passing by Park Street ? and said: ?I have heard about your scripts; why don?t you come and narrate me one?? Honestly, I was tired and I really didn?t want to go through that whole reading-your-heart-out-to-blank-faces ordeal one more time. I told him I would come over one day and forgot about it.

But I kept bumping into him and he kept pestering me about a narration. Just to get him off my back, I took a printout of the 60-odd pages of Resh and went and read it out in his freezing, smoke-filled office. I couldn?t wait to run out of that cold chimney when he said he was producing the film and calling it Paanch Adhyay after the five chapters the film was split into.

Eleven drafts, three Mumbai trips, four months later I embarked upon what has been the bestest year of my life. Composing the songs, shooting the film, editing it, dubbing it, re-editing it, scoring it, re-re-editing it, grading it, mixing it? every moment has been a blessing.

Watching Shantanuda (Moitra) walk out of the room and come back with the most moving piece of melody, watching Dia (Mirza) howl incessantly in the dubbing room to match the mood of the moment, watching Arghyada (Arghyakamal Mitra) slip in a prolonged shot of silence to create the most heartbreaking of effects?. The endless wait up till the Paanch Adhyay experience has all been worth it.

Chapter 5: A new chapter?

?You have not been nice to so many films and filmmakers; get ready to face the music!? Now, that has been the most ?critical? concern from my friends, colleagues and well-wishers. Ironically in our jobs, we are remembered more for the gaali reviews than the glowing reviews.

Well, can I share a secret? From the moment those lights go off at the theatres, nothing else matters. It?s just you and the film. Hype, reputation, personal fondness, fanboyhood? everything?s dug deep into the popcorn tub. You know it when you like a film; you know it when you don?t. And you got to be honest about it. That?s all I have been. Always.

There?s a line Dia?s Ishita tells Priyanshu?s Arindam, who plays a filmmaker in Paanch Adhyay, in the film: ?That you have been able to make the film the way you wanted to make it, isn?t that enough?? It?s enough for me. It?s enough for me that I could make this film the way I wanted to make it. With my friends, with like-minded artistes and technicians, with heart and soul. Nobody can take away that experience from me. Of course, you can take a happy song and make it better. Because by the time you are reading this, my baby has crawled out to a theatre near you.

Hope you enjoy the show. Pam param pam!

Brand Ryan Says 30% are Takers? | Business 2 Community

Wow, what a brand platform! First, Republican candidate Romney pronounces 47% of us as not taking responsibility for ourselves, and then his running mate Ryan says 30% of us are ?takers? not ?makers.?

Who is the angry candidate? Who seems foreign to America?

The current Republican brand ? or at least the brand that?s pounding ads in swing states, is targeted to a very narrow slice of their own party. The ads are very anti-social, anti-equality, anti-healthcare, anti-birth control and slashed government services except if a woman gets pregnant and therefore is subject to a vaginal ultrasound. Did you ever think that all that would garner about half of the electorate?

Given all that, and the economics of what appears to be the Republican plan, it seems about 120,000 US families who earn more than $8 million annually should be steadfastly Republican. This fraction of 300 million Americans, fits into a bit more than two NFL stadiums.

It seems that everyone else stands in real danger of having some very critical tax breaks and services go way on inauguration day.

But there?s a huge lesson for branding in this election.

It?s not just ?be?s? that matter to a brand. The ?wannabes? create much of the buzz around a luxury brand. And, apparently a lot of people who are being dissed by the luxury oriented Republican ticket, ?wannabe? be in those stadiums. Stripped of most higher education Pell grants, healthcare or family planning ? it would be quite a feat to be that upwardly mobile.

Who watched those debates and got some of the details ? the few that were disclosed? Just 50-60 million people, a fraction of the citizens who will be impacted by this election, or perhaps as happened in the Bush-Gore contest, the selection of the executive branch of government.

Is it the lack of attention to detail or something else ? maybe something more unflattering like how many Americans really feel about ?diversity??

Really, how do you reconcile reality?

Maybe no one is taking these threats to our way of life very seriously.

Romney-Ryan are evocative of the old comedian Don Rickles or the less old Andrew Dice Clay. As sarcastic, mean-spirited funny man brands: these men ridiculed, stereotyped, hated; and people laughed. People paid money to be in the audience and get insulted! It?s like if Jeff Foxworthy were really dissing the rednecks, not just laughing with them ? but laughing at them.

In about a month, we?ll see who?s laughing.

Income tax for year of death of the deceased deductible according to ...

Delicious Digg Facebook LinkedIn reddit StumbleUpon Twitter Bit.ly Email PDFmyURL

Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen ( freepressreleases ) October 19, 2012 ? http://www.grprainer.com/en/Law-of-Succession.html The verdict of the German Federal Finance Court (BFH) of the 04.07.2012 (AZ: II R 15/11) strongly portrayed the point in which the income tax debt for the death year of the departed is actually tax deductible.

GRP Rainer Lawyers Tax Advisors, Cologne, Berlin, Bonn, Dsseldorf, Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt www.grprainer.com explain: Consequently, going forward, the debts belonging to the deceased, consisting of church taxes, as well as, the solidarity surcharges, can be subtracted before computation of the inheritance tax by the taxation office.

It is apparent how the heir, determined by 1967 para. 1 of the German Civil Code, is generally accountable and thus responsible for the debts that the deceased left behind, not to mention that any sort of unpaid income tax is recognized as part of this particular debt. These types of debts can, in keeping with 10 para. 5 nr. 1 of the Inheritance tax law, be deducted from the net worth of the inheritance ? ahead of determining the inheritance tax.

The German Federal Court of finance takes the stance that the abatement of taxes does not need to just encompass taxes at the time of passing of life, but also the tax requirements that the passed on person, as a tax payer, had expressed by way of realizing lawful tax discount claims that build up after the calendar year of passing of life. Thus, in line with the BFH, it all depends whether the passed had expressed valid tax write offs in the past year in question. On the flip side, it matters not that the actual taxes build up at the end of the year, fundamentally right after the death of departed. This does not stand against the deadline concept ( 9, 11 of the inheritance tax law) in connection with the inheritance tax.

In this specific case, it was vital to the heir for the reason that, following the deduction of the income tax debts for the passing year of the loved one, the heir was required to pay for significantly less inheritance tax. It is definitely advisable for beneficiaries, who were refused the deduction of tax debts in figuring out the inheritance tax, to have a skilled lawyer at your side to find out if his or her situation provides similarities and when it is necessary to utilize judicial procedures.

Turkey fires on Syria in retaliation incident: state TV

BESASLAN, Turkey (Reuters) - Turkey's army fired on Syria on Friday after two shells launched from Syria landed in Turkish territory, Turkish state broadcaster TRT reported, underlining how tension between the two neighbors remains dangerously high.

TRT did not specify where the incident occurred and no further details were available. There were no reports of any casualties resulting from the exchange of fire.

Turkey has carried out a series of retaliatory strikes against President Bashar al-Assad's forces fighting rebels along the border since Syrian shelling killed five Turkish civilians in a Turkish frontier town at the start of October.

Syrian rebels clashed with Assad's troops in a town near the Turkish border province of Hatay on Friday ahead of moves to broker a brief ceasefire, a Reuters witness said.

A large plume of smoke could be seen rising from the Syrian town of Haram after an explosion around midday (0900 GMT). The morning was punctuated by sounds of small blasts and gunfire, said witnesses in the nearby Turkish village of Besaslan.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called on Friday for all sides involved in the Syrian conflict to observe a ceasefire during the Islamic Eid al-Adha festival next week.

U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is expected in Damascus later in the day to try to broker that ceasefire.

The Quick CFO Turnaround ? Samuel's CFO Blog

This is not about a CFO turning a business around quickly.

This blog is about the Quick Hiring & Unhiring of a CFO.

As someone that tracks CFO Moves every week across the country, I see this too often. Every time I see it, it bothers me, especially when I know that it could have been avoided in many cases. Here is one recently reported example of one Quick CFO Turnaround ? Ulta Beauty CFO out after 6 weeks on the job.

An outsider will never really know the reason a person leaves their position. Like a divorce, there is the official story, the company?s story, the employee?s story and the real story.

That being said, here are some things that can be done to ensure CFO hires are done well, and can be successful over the long term.

    • CFO Readiness: Previously I wrote Are you Ready for your First CFO? The same Readiness that applies for a company?s first CFO applies when a company has had a CFO for a very long time and needs to change.
    • Onboarding: CFOs need to plan their Onboarding. My take on Onboarding is in blog The First 90 Days of a New?CFO. As one CFO who went through a Quick Hiring & Unhiring told me recently ?I wish I read the book before I accepted the job?.

Hiring for any executive level position needs to be treated seriously. Unfortunately, in too many cases, companies that do not treat their executive level hiring needs with the proper attention and resources necessary. This can end up doing serious damage to their company.

Many executives that are approached for career opportunities rely on their own business acumen to assess and accept career positions. When executives, CFOs included, are looking at career opportunities for themselves, they should know that they are minimizing their own career risk when the company they are being considering by is working with a reputable Executive Search firm.

CFOs: Has being hired by a company that worked with an Executive Search firm make a difference to your career?
